CHOREOGRAPHY REQUIREMENTS

2003 NFAA youngARTS Winner in Choreography

Participants are required to submit a videotaped audition that must include at least one piece choreographed entirely by the participant.

Choreography in all forms of dance may be submitted. Pieces should be from two to five minutes in length, the total submission cannot exceed eight minutes. The number of dancers must be two or more.

Participants will be judged on concept, clarity of purpose of the dance; movement invention, exploration of movement to the purpose of the dance; development of thematic material; choreographic texture and individuality of creative voice. Participants in traditional dance forms must show originality of form and presentation of traditional material as well as originality in conceptual ideas.

NOTE: If you are chosen as a youngARTS Week finalist as a choreographer, NFAA will only pay the costs associated with your participation (travel, lodging, food, etc.). If you choose to bring your dancers to Miami for youngARTS Week, you or your school will be responsible for their expenses (travel, lodging, food, etc.) as well as their supervision while in Miami. Dancers of a choreographer's work participate only in those youngARTS Week activities directly related to the coaching, judging, and presentation of the choreographer.


REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTENT OF CHOREOGRAPHY VIDEOTAPE/DVD AUDITION:

1. Submit a NEW DVD or VHS cassette. Do not submit a mini-DV, mini-cassette or VCD.
2. Announce your audition by stating your eight digit youngARTS ID# and the three digit category code. “My youngARTS ID# is 07009999/101.” (You will receive your ID# once you have completed the registration process). You must also include the title of the piece and composer. Do not state your name or place it in or on the DVD/video case. Do not make any other comments.
3. Use a fixed point of view for your camera. Shoot straight on, leaving the camera in one location. Do not pan, move the camera or follow the dancer.
4. Dancers must wear appropriate rehearsal clothing. Do not wear any costumes.
5. Record your audition in a clearly defined interior space. Do not record your video outside.
6. Submit your audition materials according to the official mailing requirements (see left). Do not send in pre-recorded live performances, such as recitals or concerts. Audience reactions are not acceptable.
    Do not edit within a piece. Do not use special effects, dissolves, fades or wipes.
     
Recommendations
  • Test your recordings before submitting for judging. Test your VHS Tape or DVD on a standard VHS or DVD player. Tapes or DVD's that cannot be played will be disqualified.
  • The camera should be placed sufficiently close to the performers so that positioning and movement of all parts of the body are clearly visible.
  • Please note that the registration fees are non-refundable even in the case of injury. You must also be free of injury to participate in youngARTS Week if you are chosen as a finalist.
  • Make sure the sound and picture are both of good quality. The backdrop should be neutral and free of creases and breaks.
NOTE: DVDs/Videotapes will not be returned. Participants should make and keep copies of all materials submitted. NFAA is not responsible for materials lost or damaged in the mail. DVDs/Videotapes that cannot be viewed will be disqualified.
